Hunting

I am of the school of bolt action rifles. The 308 is fine for deer however, I would want something a little stouter for elk. I just bought a new Remington 700 BDL chambered in 270 win, this will be me new deer gun, I would use my 300 win mag for elk, If not I would use something like the 3006 or a 7 mil mag. Also, in PA, where my family's cabin is, you can't use semi-autos. Where will you be hunting?

I'm with max on this. The AR would be good to go and, if you want a rifle to fit multiple roles, you'd be good with that. But I like the old school, walnut stocked hunting rifles and .30-06 is a great round with plenty of availability, versatility, and low cost. I'd go with a Remington m700.

.308 vs. .30-06

In all honesty there isn't a hill of beans worth of difference between them. A quality 165gr bullet up to 180's and either work fine.

I have both and have used both. The elk can't tell the difference. What it boils down to for me is ease of use and what I shoot well. I have an old .338 Win Mag that has many scars and shows wear. I use it a lot because it not only will shoot through an elk from stem to stern but it is one of my most accurate rifles. I have tons of confidence in it. My other well used elk gun is a short barreled .308W with a 1.5x scope. It weighs very little and works well with 180gr Rem Corelokts, and I can shoot it well out to 300yards with little thought. Two completely different guns, both well used, both effective.

Pick something you'll like and feels good to you. I can't stand Savages but hear plenty who brag on them. An AR10 would be fun & I still may get one sometime. My personal favorite is a Win M70.

Any facorty gun you buy will benefit from a trip to a gunsmith for a trigger tuning & bedding.

Last but not least, Good Luck!
